Our mission to clear Antonio Chavez and Jose Beltran’s names sparked the creation of The Wrongfully Convicted. Their situation exemplifies the various factors that contribute to wrongful convictions, i.e., misconduct by law police and prosecutors, mistaken identity, reliance on informants, inadequate legal representation, and a deeply ingrained system of racial injustice that continues to oppress the wrongly convicted.
Over the past year, we have educated and helped families navigate the complexities of the legal system and empowered them to take on an active role advocating for their loved ones. We worked collaboratively with the District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit in bringing justice for Antonio Chavez and Jose Beltran. Our efforts involved raising awareness, conducting local outreach, and networking with community stakeholders and political figures.
